Denmark vs North Macedonia — World Cup 2026 Playoff Semi-Final (Path D) — Parken Stadium, Copenhagen — Wednesday 26 March 2026, 21:00 CET. Denmark are heavy favourites at odds of 1.31, but North Macedonia have recent history of pulling off seismic playoff upsets. The winner faces Czechia or Republic of Ireland in the Path D final on March 31.

Path D Bracket: The Road to the World Cup

Denmark find themselves in Path D of the UEFA World Cup playoffs after finishing second in qualifying Group C. The path features two single-leg semi-finals on March 26, with the winners meeting in a final on March 31.

The ultimate prize is enormous: the Path D winner will be placed in Group A at the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Mexico, South Africa and South Korea.

How Denmark Got Here

Denmark should already be at the World Cup. They dominated qualifying Group C for long stretches and had automatic qualification within reach heading into the final matchday. But a dramatic 4–2 collapse against Scotland in Glasgow — where the Scots twice fought back to equalise before running away with the game after Denmark were reduced to ten men — condemned Brian Riemer's side to second place and the playoff route.

It was a painful ending to what had otherwise been a solid qualifying campaign. Denmark will be desperate to avoid extending their agony and to bury what FIFA.com described as their "Scottish demons".

North Macedonia: Never Write Them Off

On paper, this looks like a mismatch. North Macedonia finished fourth in Group J and are ranked considerably lower than Denmark. Their squad lacks household names and they arrive in Copenhagen as massive underdogs.

But anyone who dismisses North Macedonia hasn't been paying attention.

The Italy Shock

In March 2022, North Macedonia stunned European champions Italy 1–0 in Palermo with a stoppage-time goal from Aleksandar Trajkovski. Italy had 32 shots to North Macedonia's four and 16 corners to zero — but North Macedonia had the only goal. It remains one of the greatest upsets in World Cup qualifying history.

New coach Goce Sedloski, a 100-times capped defender hired in December 2025, called the job "the greatest responsibility of my career". His squad includes eight players of Albanian heritage, including Enis Bardhi and Ezgjan Alioski, alongside key men like goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski (Valencia), midfielder Elif Elmas, and striker Bojan Miovski (Rangers).

Højlund's form at Napoli has been the standout story. After a frustrating spell at Manchester United, the 23-year-old has thrived in Italy with 10 Serie A goals, and he will carry Denmark's main goalscoring threat. Eriksen, now 33 and playing regularly at Wolfsburg, remains the heartbeat of the team with his passing range and set-piece delivery.

North Macedonia

Bojan MiovskiRangersProlific striker in Scotland — knows what it takes to score in British football.

Head-to-Head Record

Denmark and North Macedonia have met only once before, making this a fixture with very little historical context to draw from. That unfamiliarity could play into North Macedonia's hands — Denmark's players will have limited experience of playing against this specific opposition.

Betting Preview

The bookmakers have this as one of the most lopsided fixtures in the entire playoff round. Denmark's odds reflect overwhelming favouritism.

Tactical Outlook

Expect Sedloski to set up North Macedonia in a deep, compact block — likely a 5-4-1 or 5-3-2 — designed to frustrate Denmark and limit space for Højlund. Dimitrievski will be key to their game plan, just as he was against Italy.

Denmark will dominate possession and territory but need to be patient. The danger for Riemer's side is becoming frustrated, pushing too many players forward, and being caught on the counter — exactly how Italy were undone in 2022.

Set pieces could be decisive. Eriksen's delivery is world-class, and Denmark have height advantages across the squad with Vestergaard, Andersen and Hjulmand.

Our Prediction

Prediction: Denmark 2–0 North Macedonia

Denmark have too much quality for North Macedonia, but this will not be a comfortable ride. We expect a tense first half before Denmark break the deadlock, likely through Højlund or from a set piece. A second goal late on kills the tie. However, if it remains 0–0 deep into the second half, the pressure will mount and the Italy ghost will start to loom. Denmark should get the job done — but the margin could be thin.
